The Capezzana estate, located 24 kilometers northwest of Florence, has been in the hands of the Conti Contini Bonacossi family for generations. Today, the younger generation takes the lead, with Filippo Contini Bonacossi overseeing olive oil production. Olive oil has been crafted at Capezzana since Etruscan and Roman times, with the earliest recorded mention in a contract from 804 AD, during Charlemagne’s reign, which references both the estate’s “vineyards and olive groves.” The 14th-century diaries of merchant Francesco Datini reveal that as early as 1300, the oil produced around Florence—spanning Carmignano, Chianti, Rufina, and Calenzano—was highly regarded, fetching premium prices in London and Bruges.
